Mark Roest

Clinical Director

Mark Roest joined the Synapse Research Institute team on the first of October 2014 as Head of Clinical Research. In addition to several clinical studies, he works on the development and fine-tuning of platelet function tests and whole blood thrombin generation. Furthermore, he raised several single domain antibodies (VHHs), against DOACs (apixaban, edoxaban and rivaroxaban), F1+2, Dimer and antithrombin III, and other. These VHHs are used for several applications, including (immune) assay development. Furthermore, he designs fusion constructs between VHHs and enzymes, including anti-fibrin-UPA, and anti-VWF-MDCTS fusion proteins as non-immunogenic ADAMTS-13 variants. Additionally, Mark trains young scientists, including PhD, bachelor and master students. Finally, Mark has built an infrastructure at the Synapse Research Institute for commercial services to external clients who need our for laboratory services

Mark graduated from the master Biomedical Sciences at the “Rijks Universiteit Leiden”. He received his PhD title at the University of Utrecht on a thesis, entitled: “Genetic Risk Factors for Cardiovcascular Disease” as epidemiologist and biochemical engineer. He received training in pedigree research in an exchange with the University of Utah, Salt Lake City. After a position as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Clinical Chemistry at the UMC Utrecht, he switched to the Department of Clinical Chemistry and Haematology but remained at the UMC Utrecht as Assistant Professor to become the Principle Investigator on platelet function research. Here, he was also the educational coordinator of the department.
