Joost Meijers is currently Professor of Experimental Vascular Medicine at the University of Amsterdam and staff member of the Department of Experimental Vascular Medicine at the Amsterdam UMC. Trained as a biochemist at Utrecht University, her earned his PhD in 1988 on biochemical investigations of the blood coagulation system (supervised by Prof.dr. B.N. Bouma). He continued his work with a three-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle under the supervision of Prof.dr. E.W. Davie, focusing on molecular, biological and biochemical investigations of the coagulation system.
Upon his return to Utrecht University, Joost worked for seven years as Assistant and Associate Professor, before moving in 1999 to the Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam. There he became Chair (1999-2014) and, since 2008, Professor at the department of Experimental Vascular Medicine (Amsterdam UMC). In 2014, he partially joined Sanquin Research in Amsterdam, where he worked for a decade, serving as Chair of the Department of Plasma Proteins (2015-2018) and Chair of the Works Council (2021-2023). In 2024, he established CoagConsult, a consultancy specializing in blood coagulation research and diagnostics.
His scientific achievements have been widely recognized. Joost received several prestigious awards, including a NATO Science Fellowship, an Academy Fellowship from the Royal Netherlands Academy for Arts and Sciences, an Established Investigatorship from the Netherlands Heart Foundation, and the Internationals Society on Fibrinolysis and Proteolysis (ISFP) prize in 2023. He is also an honorary member of the Netherlands Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis (NVTH).
Over his career, Joost supervised 20 PhD theses and published more than 425 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals such as Blood, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Journal of Clinical Investigation, and New England Journal of Medicine. His work, with an h-index above 100 (Google Scholar), has been recognized in global rankings such as Best Scientists in Medicine and Leader in Biology and Biochemistry. His research led to seven patents, including one on procoagulant cyclodextrins that laid the foundation for Alveron Pharma, where he currently chairs the Scientific Advisory Board.
In addition to his research, Joost has made major contributions to diagnostics and education. He established national training programs in coagulation diagnostics for technicians and clinical chemists in training. Furthermore, he coordinated (and taught at) the Dutch graduate student course on thrombosis and hemostasis (2002-2005).
Joost has also held many leadership roles in professional societies. He served as secretary of the NVTH (2001 to 2006) and in 2004 he was nominated to the council of the ISFP. From 2010 to 2016 he was the Secretary/Treasurer of that society. He was the Vice-President of the 20th Congress of the ISFP that was held in Amsterdam in 2010. In addition, he served on a number of scientific advisory boards, and was Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Landsteiner Foundation for Blood Research from 2011-2015. He was member of the Supervisory Board of the Dutch Thrombosis Foundation (2014-2019), and the ECAT Foundation (2017-2025). Within the ISTH, he chaired the SSC Subcommittee on Factor XI and the Contact System (2015-2019), the WHO-ISTH Standards Liaison Group (2018-2023), and served as the ISTH SSC Chair (2022-2024).
