Ilaria De Simone joined the Synapse Research Institute in March 2022, where plasmin generation is her research focal point. She optimized a calibrated, automated method using a plasmin-specific substrate to assess plasmin generation in the healthy population as well as in patient cohorts. Her goal is to utilize this assay to expand fibrinolysis-related scientific knowledge and improve clinical diagnostics. To this purpose Ilaria collaborates with multiple (inter)national clinical and research institutes.
She attended the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, where she studied biomedical sciences. After obtaining a master’s degree in basic and translational sciences in 2018, she started as a PhD student within a ITN Marie- Sklodowska- Curie Horizon 2020 Research program. Her research explored platelet interactions with matrix agonists and coagulation-generated ligands, with work conducted at Maastricht University (Netherlands), Semmelweis University (Budapest, Hungary), and the University of Reading (UK).
