Philip de Groot graduated in Chemistry from the University of Groningen and obtained his PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Amsterdam with a thesis entitled “Genetic and Biochemical studies on lysosomal enzymes”. He went on with a post-doc at Sanquin, the Dutch Blood Transfusion Services, in Amsterdam. Here he was introduced to the fascinating secrets of blood coagulation.
After 4 years he was asked to join the Department of Haematology at the University Medical Center in Utrecht. In 1999, following the retirement of the department head, he was appointed full professor of Biochemistry of Thrombosis and Haemostasis and head of the Department of Haematology, responsible for laboratory diagnostics, education and research. His specific scientific interest was focussed on autoimmunity-induced thrombosis and platelet-vessel wall interactions.
Over the course of his career, Philip de Groot held several prominent positions, including Chair of the Dutch Society of Hemostasis & Thrombosis and Council member of the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. He published more than 500 scientific papers, received a number of awards, and successfully guided 63 PhD student to their thesis. His scientific impact is reflected in an H-index of 119 (Google Scholar).
Since 2014 he assists the Synapse Research Institute as a scientific advisor, where he provides support and contributes intellectually to research projects, while also fostering the educational development of PhD students.
